How to Repair Damaged Alloy Wheels

It can be frustrating to have invested in smart alloy wheels only to get scuffs and cracks further down the line, but it’s all part of driving: every time you steer your car into a tight corner, you’re bound to develop a few road bumps that will cause small cracks and scuffs in your wheels. But how you care for your wheels depends on how severe the damage is.

Can Alloy Wheels Be Repaired?

It’s definitely possible to repair a scuff or crack, and there are several different ways you can do it. The first thing that you need to know is that repair jobs are not always successful.

If the damage is severe, it’s worth trying a repair if you need a quick fix; it’s often cheaper and more convenient than buying new wheels. But if the repairs fail, it may be worth buying a new set of wheels; it’s better to be safe than sorry.

How Do I Repair My Alloy Wheels?

There are a few different ways to repair your wheels, and they all use different techniques. The most popular method is to sand down the scuff or cracks and refinishes the edges. You can also use cold welding to fix a crack, which involves spraying two surfaces together, causing them to stick together.

The Process of Repairing Alloy Wheels

These are some of the most common methods, with a brief explanation of how they work and what you need to do to repair your wheels.

  1. With sanding, you need to make sure that the cracks and scuffs are properly cleaned and sanded down. If they’re not, it won’t be possible to fix them. You have to clean off all the old paint and then apply a new coat of paint.
  2. Cold welding is one of the most common welding processes. The key is to apply two surfaces together and then let the gases in the two substances cause a chemical reaction that bonds the two surfaces together. Once this is done, the process is permanent.
  3. Bonding is a fairly easy process that involves a spray applied to the edges of the crack or scuff, and then a bonding agent is applied to stick them together.
  4. Most paint shops won’t charge you a lot to repair your wheels, and it can be a relatively easy process. However, some paint shops may not offer this service, so it’s worth double-checking before buying your paint.

How to Repair Alloy Wheels That Leak Air

One of the common problems our customers face when they buy alloy wheels from us is that they’re uneven, and as a result, they leak air. It’s not uncommon for newer alloy wheels to develop this problem. It’s a really easy fix, though!

The Process

The first thing you need to do is remove the valve caps from your wheels. Then you have to use a hammer to tap the valve into the wheel. Once the valve is in properly, you’ll see that the wheel will be even, and it won’t be leaking air.

Why Invest in Alloy Wheels

Alloy wheels offer a much better finish than steel wheels, and they’re much easier to clean and maintain. They’re also far lighter, so you can save on gas and drive more efficiently. They also generally cost a lot less than regular sports wheels, so it’s worth considering an alloy wheel upgrade if you’re on a tight budget.
